Characters of Finite Groups, Algebraic Integers, and Burnside
The goal of this note is to write down the proofs of results about characters of irreducible representations of finite groups, and specifically, the result (due to Burnside) that each of them vanishes at at least one element of the group. We present various results told to us by various people, and conclude with two theorems by Gallagher, which strengthen or generalize Burnside’s theorem for fi...

متن کاملWitt Groups of Grassmann Varieties
We compute the total Witt groups of (split) Grassmann varieties, over any regular base X. The answer is a free module over the total Witt ring of X. We provide an explicit basis for this free module, which is indexed by a special class of Young diagrams, that we call even Young diagrams.

(1) D(α) = D(K)(I(α))2, where I(α) = [OK : Z[α]], the index of the ring generated by α in the full ring of integers OK of K. Classically, the index of the field K is the greatest common divisor of all indices I(α) for α ∈ OK with K = Q(α). Dedekind was the first to show that the index may not be 1 by exhibiting certain cubic and quartic fields with this property. By results of Bauer and von Żyl...
